Whatever career we choose, there are many different ways to acquire the skills we need to be the best. The traditional way to become a pattern maker/seamstress is formal training and education, but that was not my way. I learned to sew on my own, starting from craft kits as a child to making my own senior prom dress in high school. It wasn't perfect, but I made it all for just $20, and I was very proud of myself. I never stopped learning throughout my life, but it was my passion for performing as a dancer that has kept it going.
I have loved dance all my life, I have lived and breathed dancing, even professionally, and my developing sewing skills made sure that I was alway in demand for last minute costume emergencies wherever I went. That led to my introduction to costuming, with my skills and interests in all aspects of costumes following along with my dance career ever since. Along the way, through books and experience, I learned the skills I needed to be the pattern maker/seamstress I am today.
That is over 30 years in the business, learning as I went, and do you know what? I realized recently that all the experience I have, not just as a seamstress, but in dance, gives me a far greater insight into what makes a truly special, beautiful and practical costume than those who have college degrees in fashion. I truly understand costuming, how things work on stage, what looks good to an audience, the kind of fit you need as a dancer to give your best performance. That is knowledge that can't be taught in college, it comes from a 20+ years dance career, working in small shows where I also doubled as the assistant seamstress, creating costumes for shows on the Las Vegas strip and all the other places that my dance career took me.
Today, I bring all that experience, all my sewing skills and costuming vision to you. Whatever the event, show or competition, I can help you find the perfect look. I know what works, I know what looks great and I love creating something special that will help you stand out on stage. I am a great believer in the idea that you never stop learning, and even today, I am always looking for new ways to bring my ideas to life. Whether its creative ideas or new technology in materials and construction, I always look to use the best available for your costume. With my skills as a costumer, and a unique understanding of the dance industry itself, I offer more than any formal qualification could have given me, and I work hard to make sure that every one of my valued customers enjoy the benefits of that experience.
